A water stain spreading across the ceiling. A drip you can hear but can't find. Shingles in the yard after a storm. However you discovered it, you now know your roof has a problem — and what you do in the next 24 hours makes a real difference in how much damage (and cost) you end up with.

Here's a simple, step-by-step plan from the team at WDM Contracting.

Step 1: Contain the water inside

Start where the water is showing up:

  • Put a bucket or container under any active drip. Toss an old towel in the bottom so it doesn't splash.
  • Move furniture, rugs, and electronics out of the area. Water spreads farther than you think.
  • If the ceiling is bulging, that's water pooling above the drywall. Place a bucket underneath and poke a small hole in the center of the bulge with a screwdriver. It feels wrong, but letting the water drain in one controlled spot prevents the ceiling from collapsing in a much bigger one.

Step 2: Don't get on the roof

We mean it. A wet roof is a slippery roof, and no leak is worth a fall. Leave the climbing to people with safety equipment and experience. There's nothing you can safely do up there that we can't do better — and you could easily make the damage worse by walking on weakened spots.

If you want to look, do it from the ground. Walk around the house and note anything obvious: missing or lifted shingles, damaged metal around the chimney, or debris on the roof.

Step 3: Take photos of everything

Before you clean anything up, grab your phone and photograph:

  • The ceiling or wall stains inside
  • Any water damage to floors or belongings
  • What you can see of the roof from the ground
  • Fallen shingles or debris in the yard

If the damage came from a storm, these photos matter for your homeowner's insurance claim. Date-stamped pictures of fresh damage are far more convincing than photos taken weeks later.

Step 4: Check your attic (if it's safe)

If you can get into your attic safely, a quick look can tell you a lot. Bring a flashlight and look for wet insulation, darkened wood, or a visible drip path. Water often enters the roof in one place and shows up on your ceiling somewhere else entirely — the attic is where you can trace it.

Don't stress if you can't find the source. Finding hidden leaks is exactly what a professional inspection is for.

Step 5: Call a local roofer — not later, now

Small leaks don't stay small. Water that gets past your shingles soaks into the wood underneath, and wet wood leads to rot, mold, and much bigger repair bills. A repair that costs a few hundred dollars today can turn into thousands if it waits a season. For perspective, most roof repairs in 2026 run between a few hundred and a couple thousand dollars — while ignoring one can eventually put you into full-replacement territory.

When you call WDM at 848-360-6121, here's what happens:

  1. We ask a few quick questions — where the water is showing up, when it started, and whether there was a storm.
  2. We get eyes on your roof. We inspect the roof, the attic, and the flashing (the metal seals around chimneys and vents where most leaks start).
  3. You get a straight answer. What's wrong, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs — in writing, before any work begins.
