Gutters are the least glamorous part of your home's exterior — right up until they fail. Then water pours down your siding, pools against your foundation, and suddenly that "boring" strip of aluminum is responsible for some very expensive problems.

If you're considering new gutters, this guide covers what actually matters: the right size, the right material, and what a quality installation costs in 2026.

What gutters actually do for your home

When it rains, your roof collects an enormous amount of water and sends all of it to the edges. A 2,000-square-foot roof sheds over 1,200 gallons in a single inch of rain. Gutters catch that water and carry it away from the house.

Without them — or with old ones that leak and overflow — that water lands right at the base of your home, where it can crack foundations, flood basements, rot siding, and wash out landscaping. Good gutters are cheap insurance against all of it.

Seamless gutters: why they've become the standard

Older gutter systems came in short sections joined together, and every joint was a future leak. Seamless gutters solve this: the gutter is formed on-site from a single roll of aluminum, custom-cut to the exact length of each side of your home. The only joints are at the corners and downspouts.

Fewer seams means fewer leaks, less maintenance, and a cleaner look. This is what WDM installs — seamless systems formed at your home on installation day.

Sizing: the detail most people never think about

Gutters come in two main widths, and choosing between them is one of the most important calls on the project:

  • 5-inch gutters — the standard size, right for most homes with average roof sizes
  • 6-inch gutters — carry roughly 40% more water; the smart choice for larger roofs, steep roofs (water comes off them faster), or metal roofs

Downspouts matter just as much — too few, and even correctly sized gutters overflow in a heavy storm. And the whole system needs the correct pitch: a slight, nearly invisible slope toward the downspouts so water flows instead of sitting.

This is the "properly sized, properly pitched, properly installed" part of the job. Get any of the three wrong, and the gutters won't do their job — no matter what they cost.

Materials: what your options look like in 2026

  • Aluminum — the most popular choice by far, and what most seamless systems are made from. It doesn't rust, comes in dozens of colors, and typically runs $4–$9 per foot for materials. Installed as a complete system, most aluminum seamless projects land in the $8–$15 per foot range.
  • Steel — stronger and heavier, usually $8–$10 per foot in materials. Worth considering where falling branches are a concern.
  • Copper — beautiful and extremely long-lasting, at a premium price ($15–$25+ per foot). Usually chosen for high-end or historic homes.

WDM also builds custom solutions when a home needs something outside the standard sizes.

What a full installation costs

For a typical New Jersey home, a complete seamless gutter installation in 2026 generally lands between $650 and $1,700+, depending on:

  • The size of your home — cost scales with the total footage of gutter and number of downspouts
  • Height and access — a two-story colonial takes more time than a ranch
  • Material and size — 6-inch and premium materials cost more than standard 5-inch aluminum
  • Old gutter removal — hauling away the old system adds a little to the job

You'll get an exact number in writing before any work begins — that's how every WDM estimate works.

What installation day looks like

A gutter installation is one of the quickest exterior upgrades you can make. In most cases it's done in a single day:

  1. Old gutters come down and get hauled away
  2. The fascia (the board the gutters attach to) gets checked — any rotted sections are flagged and fixed, not covered up
  3. New seamless gutters are formed on-site to your home's exact measurements
  4. Gutters are hung with the correct pitch and securely fastened
  5. Downspouts are placed to move water well away from your foundation
